The purpose of the experiment was to see how much force was needed to move different objects.
Lab Question: What is the force and motion of certain objects of different sizes and weights?
Hypothesis: The larger/heavier an object, the more force will be needed to move it.
Materials: Push/Pull Meter, shoe, scissors book, string, paper clip
1. Hang shoe from the paper clip
2. Hang paper clip (with shoe) from the middle of the rubber band of the Push/Pull Meter
3. Starting from the ground, lift Meter up 36 inches to the tabletop
4. Write the number that the rubber band moves to on the Meter in copybook
5. Tie string to the book
6. Hang string (with book) from the paper clip
7. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 with the book
8. Hang scissors from the paper clip
9. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 with the scissors
Observations: When the Meter was lifted upward from the ground to the tabletop, each object pulled the rubber band downward. The book pulled the rubber band down the farthest on the Meter followed by the shoe then the scissors.
Data Analysis: Shoe = 6; Book = 8; Scissors = 1
Conclusion: One force on the object was in the upward direction (lifting the Meter) while another force (gravity) was pulling the object hanging from the Meter in the opposite direction (downward). When the amount of force on an object in one direction stays the same, more force is needed to move a bigger or heavier object in the other direction than a smaller or lighter one. Yes, the hypothesis is supported by this experiment.
