Title: Mock Rock Lab, December 5,2011 Mr. Sheng and Mrs. . Lab partner, Madison Ott

Lab Question/Problem:

What are the properties a Geologist might use to describe a Mock Rock?

If I break down the rock, then I will be able to find out what it is made of.

Safety goggles, gloves, hand lens, measuring tape, triple beam balance, two picks, water, mock rock, paper clip, paper plate.

Describe the rock in detail.
The rock has tiny green and red gems on it. The weight is like a golf ball. Its texture is medium. It is hard yet, it can be broken with a pick.

-Make surface observations.
The surface looks sandy in color such as light brown. It feels bumpy and smooth together like sandpaper.

- Sketch or trace the rock and write observations.
The rock texture is medium. It is hard and be broken with pick. It is light weight like a golf ball. It is light brown in color. The rock has a circle shape with bumpy sides.

-Make magnified observations.
The rock looks like it is made of sand. The rock is solid. I can see the little grains of sand. It is shaped like a circle with bumpy edges and thick in the middle.

-Draw a magnified view of a small part of your rock.
-Measure the diameter (the distance across)
-Measure the circumference (the distance around)
-Measure the depth (the thickness)
-Measure the mass
-Break rock into pieces, use picks to break the rocks apart and separate into the different ingredients sorting them into piles.
-After sorting, write observations of each pile.

Observations: Include the above observations and measurements, plus the observations of the vials, any digital and/or dissecting microscope observations, and evaporated blister slide observations.
